Free your iPhone with Jailbreak

Tuesday, April 5th, 2011

Techlivery | Free your iPhone with Jailbreak | There is a new twist taking hold of the iPhone hoopla and although it has been around for a while, it was not really something known to the general public, but only to those who are considered techies and geeks.

Well, hold onto your hat, because the secret is out and it has gone viral. If you have an iPhone, you can now set it free, break it out and unleash its power. The new twist is called, “Jailbreak” and when applied to your iPhone it will remove all of the phone’s limitations as imposed by AT&T and Apple. The process of getting the jailbreak ability is done by acquiring a simple software application that is downloaded to your computer and then transferred to the phone. I am not going to tell you where to get the application, but I am sure that you will, if interested, find it on your own.

I can hear the wheels turning in your heads and the big question, “How does Jailbreaking my iPhone benefit me?”

The answer to that question can be summed up in two words, “customizing” and “applications.” The world of information and smartphone technology is loaded with a tremendous amount of third-party applications that are not on the market. The unseen apps are very useful, fun and really cool. There is another really cool ability that jailbreaking gives you and it is the fact that you can use your phone with a carrier other than AT&T. That’s right, by using the jailbreak method to unlock your phone, you will not be locked into using the carrier that you receive your service from.

So, let’s say your carrier is AT&T; once you jailbreak your phone, you can use T-Mobile or any other carrier that uses Global System for Mobile Communications, which is a cellular phone protocol that several cellular companies use in the U.S. and Asia. There is another protocol called Code Division Multiple Access, which is used in other parts of the world, namely Europe.

Thus, no matter what part of the world you’re in, if your iPhone is unlocked, you will have the ability to seamlessly switch carriers at no cost.

AT&T and T-Mobile use the GSM protocol, while Verizon and Sprint use CDMA. Once you make the determination as to what cellular protocol your carrier uses, it becomes easier to determine what carrier you may be able to switch to.

Now here comes the big question and the answer. Is jailbreaking my iPhone illegal and if so, how will Apple and AT&T know? Well, you can rest easy, because it is perfectly legal to jailbreak your iPhone. There is no law against it and furthermore, there is no way for AT&T or Apple to see or find out that a smartphone has been unlocked using the jailbreak method. However, there is a downside in that if you should have any problems with your iPhone, and you need to have your carrier deal with a repair or replacement, if it is discovered that you used a jailbreak app to unlock your phone, your warranty will immediately become void.

If you’re going to do a jailbreak on your phone, remember that should you have any problems with your phone, make sure you reset the phone back to its original factory standards. This will correct your problem and allow you to re-jailbreak, the phone or get the service you need from your carrier to repair your phone without them becoming aware of what you’ve done.

While I was researching the jailbreak craze, ironically, I found that there are countless people, advertising on the Internet as to their ability to jailbreak your iPhone for a fee and some of them have turned their skill into a very lucrative side business. In speaking to a few of the them, I found that they tended to be college students or “geeks” who need extra income and who have cultivated the practice of performing a jailbreak down to a science.

Let us not deceive ourselves into thinking that the smartphone service carriers like AT&T and the iPhone creator, Apple will let this process continue. It is probably a safe bet that they are already trying to come up with a means to prevent jailbreaking and unlocking of the iPhone. It’s just like Microsoft and operating systems. If you remember, there was a time when you could have a friend or family member either give you their Microsoft operating system disks or make a copy and you could download the new operating system for free, but as you and I both know, Microsoft got wise to this and started creating licensing codes that go on all operating system disks and have to be entered into your PC before the operating system will download. That licensing code, from that point on will only be associated with you and your PC or laptop, making it impossible to be used again by anyone other than you.

You can be assured that AT&T along with Apple are actively pursuing a solution very much like Microsoft’s and will put it out in due time. The ultimate question, regarding their solution to the problem, will be whether they let the consumer know that there is a blocking mechanism in place, or will they use it to catch people doing the deed.

I feel it is only proper to close with the fact that although it is not illegal to jailbreak your iPhone, one must be aware of the moral and ethical overtures associated with this practice, but in the end, it is a personal matter for all to contemplate in making a decision to move forward with doing a jailbreak on an iPhone if you own one. “To jailbreak an iPhone or not to jailbreak an iPhone.
